Grace for the Journey: Christian Encouragement and Self-Care for Caregivers
Grace for the Journey
Dear Caregiver,
Welcome to May.
May is the fifth month of the year, and the number five is often associated with grace. What a fitting reminder for caregivers, because grace is something we need every single day. Grace to keep going. Grace to begin again. Grace to care for others without losing ourselves completely in the process. Grace to breathe, to rest, to regroup, and to trust God in every season.
May is also a month that brings so much to mind. It is a season of blooming, growth, beauty, and fresh strength. It is a time when we see evidence that what has been planted can grow. It is also Mother’s Day month, which invites us to reflect on the women whose love, prayers, wisdom, and sacrifices have shaped our lives.
For me, this month carries a deeply personal meaning.
A Tribute to My Mother
This May, I honor the life and legacy of my mother, Mary Louise Hopkins.

My mother was a woman of deep faith and unwavering devotion to God. She loved Him with all her heart. She was an evangelist, a worshipper, a musician, and a teacher of the Gospel. She played both the pianoand the accordion, and there was never a time when she was not looking for an opportunity to witness and share the love of God with someone.
She lived what she believed.
She did not just speak about faith. She carried it, taught it, sang it, and poured it into others. Her life was a testimony of wholehearted love for God and steadfast service to people.
She was also the one who told me to write.
Those words mattered more than she may have ever known. Because of her encouragement, I stepped into writing. Because of her belief in me, I have published many books that now inspire others. Because of her, I get to do so much of what I do today.
Her voice still echoes in my life.
Every message I share, every book I write, every person I encourage, every room I speak in, and every caregiver I pour into carries some part of the seed she planted in me. Her legacy lives on not only in memory, but in impact.
What a gift that is.
My mother's favorite Bible passage was: “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart;
and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him,
and he shall direct thy paths.” — Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)
The Grace We Carry Forward
As caregivers, many of us are walking in the strength of what someone poured into us.
Maybe it was a mother. Maybe it was a grandmother, aunt, mentor, spiritual mother, or another woman whose love and faith helped shape who we are. May is a beautiful time to pause and thank God for those legacies.
It is also a time to consider what we are carrying forward.
What are you planting through your words, your prayers, your service, your compassion, and your example?
Even on the days when caregiving feels hidden or exhausting, your life is still speaking. Your faithfulness still matters. Your love is still leaving an imprint. The grace of God at work in you is touching more lives than you may ever fully know.
A Gentle Self-Care Reminder for May
This month, I want to encourage you to receive grace for yourself too.
Caregivers are often quick to extend compassion to everyone else while being hard on themselves. But grace is not only something you give away. It is something you are allowed to receive.
So this month, let grace meet you in practical ways.
Let grace look like taking a short walk.
Let grace look like sitting quietly with your journal.
Let grace look like saying no without guilt.
Let grace look like resting before you are completely worn down.
Let grace look like asking for help.
Let grace look like honoring your own heart as tenderly as you honor everyone else’s.
You do not have to earn grace. You only have to receive it.
A Word for Mother’s Day Month
Mother’s Day can be beautiful, but it can also stir many emotions.
For some, it is joyful. For others, it brings grief, longing, remembrance, or a mixture of all three. This month, let us make room for tenderness. Let us honor mothers, spiritual mothers, and women of faith whose love has shaped generations. Let us also extend compassion to those who are missing their mothers, grieving strained relationships, or carrying quiet heartaches this season.
God meets us all with grace.
A Final Word for May
As you move through this month, I pray you will remember this:
Grace is not weakness.
Grace is strength from God for the journey.
Grace is what carries us when we feel like we do not have enough.
Grace is what reminds us that we are held, helped, and never alone.
And as I honor my mother, Mary Louise Hopkins, this month, I am reminded that the seeds planted in love and faith do not die. They keep growing. They keep speaking. They keep bearing fruit.
May this month be filled with grace for every step you take.
Closing Prayer
Prayer:
Father, thank You for the gift of grace. Thank You for the women whose faith, love, and encouragement have shaped our lives. I thank You especially for the legacy of mothers and spiritual mothers whose seeds still bear fruit. Strengthen every caregiver this month. Wrap them in Your grace, comfort every tender place, and remind them that their labor of love is never unseen. Let May be a month of peace, remembrance, renewal, and strength. In Jesus’ name, amen.
With care,
